Halo Spin-Off Games

13.03.2021

343 Industries have stated that after Halo Infinite they are open to doing some spin-off games in the Halo franchise. At this point, we've only three spin-off games. These being Halo 3: ODST, Halo Wars, and Halo Wars 2. Only being the Halo Wars games being another genre of games while Halo 3: ODST is more of a DLC campaign to Halo 3. The fact that 343 promises new spin-offs could mean both new genres but also new types of First Person Shooters. Let's get into what spin-offs I would like to see...

Halo: Flood

This would be as the title says, a game focused on Flood. Halo has the power fantasy which makes the Flood seem kind of useless compared to the books. And I believe taking the power fantasy away from the game would bring that fear into the mix.

This game would be a horror game. You are no longer a Spartan who can kill hundreds of Flood without a problem, you are now a civilian. In Halo 3, Flood gets to Earth. There isn't much Flood but they are there. The idea is to have you as a civilian who is still left there as the Flood attacks. You are alone, you barely know anything about fighting, and you are too far away from people like the Master Chief to get help.

The idea is to have a similar type of gameplay as we see in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. You are able to fight back but it is much harder. This time you don't have an Assault Rifle, it is a Magnum and barely any ammunition. The idea is to make you feel powerless until the later part of the game where you, the character, start to get hang of things.

The game should end with you getting away. You were able to escape the Flood outbreak. And now ONI agents arrive for the rescue. Or that is what you think. What they instead to, is to kill you. The ONI soldiers shoot you down, make sure you are infected to then be killed. Hiding what happened.

Halo ODST 2

There are some great novels continuing the story of Alpha 9, the ODST team we see in Halo 3: ODST. Continuing their story for the people who aren't into the lore and "extended universe" would be perfect. The game would have to change a few things though as a novel and a game can't show the same things.

Or it could be a continuation of the novels. To show what happens with Buck further down the line. Buck became a Spartan-IV in Halo: New Blood. The novel also shows how Rookie, the main protagonist of Halo 3: ODST is killed. This makes the whole team go through a living Hell. Dutch retires while Buck, Mickey, and Romeo become Spartans. Mickey later betrays the team leading to the team being disbanded.

There is a sequel novel to New Blood which I can honestly say I haven't read fully. All I know is that it brings the squad back together. I believe a good way to make this game is to have a new character finding out what happened to the team. Let's say, Buck disappears and the new character has to find him. With this, we could get a lot of missions that explain a lot. Like what happened to Buck, why Buck isn't with Fireteam Osiris like in Halo 5, and how some things happened. We could get some missions that go back in time and show what happened during New Blood and the sequel. Showing how Rookie died, how Buck became a Spartan, and even how Mickey betrayed the team.

Halo: Telltale

This wouldn't be a game made by Telltale, but it would be a Telltale-like game. A game like this was supposed to be released back in the day and I believe doing this would be really cool. It could be a story close to Hunt The Truth, meaning we get a story about the dark part of ONI. For those who don't know, ONI is basically the one who owns the UNSC. They are a CIA-type of a company that hides a lot from humanity. Think a mix of the CIA, Area 51, and the Illuminati.

Hunt The Truth is a story about a reporter who digs into the truth of ONI and their secrets. I believe a story like this would work perfectly as a Telltale-like game. Have the main character be a whistleblower from ONI who wants to expose the truth. The most important part is to have endings that all work in Halo canon. Nothing would really be that different for the universe. The endings could be: The main character survives but isn't able to expose anything. The main character survives and exposes some secrets that don't bring ONI down. The main character is killed and doesn't expose anything. The main character is killed but exposes some secrets that don't bring ONI down.

Halo: Marine Warfare

I would love a marine-based Halo game. The style of Call of Duty and/or Battlefield. I believe this would be a great idea because it would be a standard Halo game but without the power fantasy. We saw something close to this in Halo 3: ODST but ODST was still somewhat of a power fantasy as the Helljumpers are the most elite soldiers that aren't enhanced.

Having a game with the marines would also make the players see the gritty part of the Halo universe. I would prefer the game to begin with your standard human vs human game and things change after a few missions. The Covenants are introduced as a real threat. In my opinion, the Covenants should be really hard to fight. The first mission with the Covenants should show the majority of your squad being slaughtered.

The game should have at least one mission where a Spartan fights alongside you. This mission should be very much like the beginning cutscene of Halo 5. The Spartan literally destroys the Covenants and saves your team. A way to really show the contrast between you as Master Chief and you as a marine.
